In December 2007, I was fortunate enough to make a working trip to southern China, Guangdong Province. I was treated to an amazing variety of great food and wonderful scenery by my two hostesses, who work with our company. The photos here are largely from the Guilin area on a weekend jaunt.
What struck me most was the fact that an amazing number of cars, trucks of all sizes, motorbikes, bicycles, three-wheel transports, and lots of pedestrians are constantly moving, albeit slowly, weaving among each other in seeming chaos, yet in a symbiotic relationship that somehow works. Drivers do not panic when someone pulls out in front of them, but merely honk a short blast and adjust to the new shape and flow. Pedestrians walk across busy streets at a normal pace, often not stopping or even looking at oncoming traffic. Time and time again I felt certain I was about to see a bad accident between person and vehicle, but enough inches separated them and everyhting was alright.
